About Us - From the Beginning

Our Club was first established by Grace Terry who heard from a friend about the Rotorua Kiwi Coffin Club and its founder Katie Williams. Grace thought it would be great for the Hawke's Bay community too and so the club was begun with the purpose of giving its members the opportunity to have some control in preparing and personalising their final "bedroom" and to have their coffin just how they or their family/whanau want theirs finished. The Mayor of Hastings officially opened the Coffin Club for us on the 7th October 2014.

Our club has grown over the past two years and we now have a fabulous committee who work equally as hard to ensure the smooth running of the club and to have a positive and happy atmosphere for all.

We have a diverse range of members, some who have had an immediate need for their coffin, some who are just planning ahead, some have returned to volunteer their time to help others prepare theirs and some who are just members because they wish to help. We welcome all members who fit any of these categories. Our club is also proud and privileged to make baby coffins which we donate for grieving parents through Ata Rangi Maternity Unit

Preparing your own coffin can be fun and empowering. We decorate our coffins to tell our won story and the completed coffin can be used as a storage cupboard, bookshelf, coffee table or whatever you can imagine. You are only limited by your won imagination.

Every Tuesday from 9-12pm you will find us at our clubrooms where it is a beehive of activity. Our members share morning tea with a cuppa or two and a natter between friends.

So if you find yourself at a loose end on a Tuesday morning, come along and see what we are all about.
